Manchester City are now considered to be the out-and-out favourites to win the title back from their cross-town rivals. The bookmakers have them priced out at 9/5 which is lower than the 2/1 odds that they shared with former co-favourites Chelsea on Monday morning prior to City’s demolition of Newcastle.
There was a lot to like about Manchester City’s performance against the Magpies, but it does remain a fact that Newcastle produced a woeful effort - a side completely discombobulated from the get-go. City did well by pounding away on lesser teams last year but it was against the best sides in the Premier League that they struggled. Look for that to be their main crux again this year if they continue to take apart sides like they did with Newcastle seemingly happy to help them out in their league opener.
Chelsea remain at a 2/1 price tag and the workmanlike manner in which they beat out Hull City and then followed it up with a tricky 2-1 victory at home to Aston Villa, who really have the Blues much more of a game than they had expected when they equalized towards the end of the first half.
The Blues are already on six points and have won their fixture this week - a fact that will allow Jose Mourinho to rest players ahead of the Monday face-off against Manchester United. This is a massive match for both sides and a clear victory for either of them would represent a mini-coup for either manager.
