English Premier League Relegation Betting

With the league winners already sorted out after Manchester United’s smashing victory yesterday at Aston Villa, the real races are starting to develop as the season draws to a close. The quest for third and fourth place are starting to be hotly-contested with plenty between all the different sides in the mix and a number of different permutations available.

The other interesting race is the battle to stay out of that third relegation spot and there are, more or less, six different sides competing for this one.

With QPR and Reading both effectively relegated on 21 points, the third spot looms large for the likes of Wigan - who look to be in the middle of pulling off another great escape.

Aston Villa have been sputtering at just the entirely wrong end of the season and they are looking like they have it all to do at the moment. Wigan remain the outright favourites for the drop with an 8/13 price tag while Aston Villa are the only real plausible contender with a 9/4 listing.

Newcastle, Norwich, Stoke and Sunderland all have prices of 16/1 listed at the moment and it’s going to be interesting to see whether any of them take a step closer to the drop over their next four fixtures.

Wigan face two tricky fixtures that they must take at least a point from when they play Spurs next time out and then City in the FA Cup. They have matches against Swansea and West Brom that they must win if they are going to pull off any type of result here. Both of those teams have punched above their weight and are comfortably sitting at the top end of the table. They don’t have much to play for other than pride at this point with European spots looking out of reach.

The really interesting variable is the final match of the season where Aston Villa face Wigan. Villa themselves have a slightly easier draw but still face a trip to Chelsea after matches at Norwich and Sunderland prior to the Wigan fixture.

It’s going to be very interesting to see how things develop but one has to admire Wigan’s ability to grind out these relegation fights year after year - they definitely have the momentum.
