Things are going from bad to worse for a couple of clubs while a few others who started the season in a bit of bother look to have turned that around and might be getting back into the swing of things with more momentum propelling them forward in the English Premier League. Chelsea may very well have stopped the bleeding with a well-fought 2-0 victory against Arsenal while Liverpool could only muster up a tame 1-1 draw on Sunday against the likes of Norwich – that's a team that Liverpool need to be beating if they are going to challenge for a European spot.
As it currently stands, both Chelsea and Liverpool aren't too far off the relegation places but the side that look absolutely locked on for the drop already appears to be Sunderland with virtually all bookmakers listing them at an extremely short price to fall through the trap door to the nPower Championship.
Right now, you'll find the Black Cats at a very slim 1/7 price for relegation from the Premier League while things look a lot less cut and dried for the other two positions. Aston Villa are currently stuck in the relegation mire and they are available at a 21/20 price tag for the drop while Newcastle are already looking a confident shout from the bookmakers to take another spin down in the lower levels for at least a year of consolidation.
With Newcastle, there has always been a simmering tension between Mike Ashley's ownership group and the fans themselves so there are probably many of the Magpies faithful who wouldn't mind a drop down for a year as long as it meant a new ownership group and a fresh approach to the type of football on offer at St James Park. Newcastle can be backed at a 6/4 price.
Norwich and Stoke are also teetering dangerously close to the drop zone and you'll find both of those clubs priced at 11/4 to go down, but out of everybody they look most likely to keep themselves in the mix and pick their performances up later on in the season.
