Even Manchester United have been able to continue their excellent run of form and the Red Devils now sit an ominous third - just 8 points behind Chelsea despite their horrible start to the season and slapdash form in recent weeks.
It hasn’t been all bad for United as they seem to be developing their old habit of winning matches where they aren’t actually playing particularly well. This was as much a hallmark of the Sir Alex Ferguson era as “Fergie Time” and it’s got to music to the ears of United fans that Louis Van Gaal has the side continuing to grind out those results despite being overmatched statistically by opponents.
Against Southampton on Monday, United were only able to cobble together a grand total of three shots on target - two of them were converted to goals by Robin Van Persie. The Dutchman continued his recent resurgence and the United side now seem to have both an in-form Van Persie playing alongside an in-form Wayne Rooney for the first time in what seems like eons to many.
Looking ahead to this weekend, the big clash is on Sunday with Manchester United facing off against Liverpool - who now sit in ninth place and have crashed out of the Champions League following their poor outing against Basel in mid-week. This is in sharp contrast to Manchester City, who were able to rescue their progression from seemingly nowhere having sat bottom of the Champions League group of death this year.
