Football betting: Next England captain odds

With Fabio Capello filling the vacant England coach's role, arguments are already raging as to whom the Italian will choose to wear the captain's armband, with Ladbrokes making David Beckham the 4/5 favourite. Go to Ladbrokes now to bet on the next England captain The issue of the England captaincy has become a hot topic of debate with John Terry now just a 6/4 shot to keep his stripes. Apart from a poor injury record and an ill-fated qualifying campaign as skipper, it would seem that the FA themselves would prefer to see Terry divested of the armband for alleged off-field antics. And if there is any man who relishes subjugating a player then it is Capello, whose coaching career path is as littered with enemies as it is trophies. Francesco Totti, Antonio Cassano, Alessandro Del Piero and Gianluigi Buffon are just four big-name players who have lambasted the very coach that guided them to titles at Roma, Real Madrid and Juventus (dis)respectively. The normally mild-mannered Buffon called Capello 'a dictator' while Cassano went so far as to label him a 'traitor' in a training ground hissy-fit. Once he takes over Don Fabio lets it be known who's the boss and he will be sure to put an end to the Wags' culture and softly, softly approach favoured by previous coaches. Capello rules with an iron fist and so sweeping changes can be expected. Whether or not that means Beckham will replace Terry remains to be seen. Capello has already fallen out with Beckham in the past, dropping him to the reserves for deigning to join LA Galaxy, although they did patch up their relationship once Capello realised how crucial Goldenballs was to his Spanish title plans. Ladbrokes spokesman Nick Weinberg believes, "sentiment makes Beckham the favourite to be handed the armband." However, Capello is not big on sentiment, or star players and he is unlikely to consider Beckham a part of his World Cup 2010 plans. His ideal captain will be a yes man, someone who is not outspoken, someone who is capable of carrying out his instructions to the letter and someone who is a winner. To that end, European Cup winner Steven Gerrard - a player Capello coveted in his Juve days - is where the smart money has already been placed @ 4/1 (in from 12s). Verdict: Steven Gerrard to be Capello's England captain @ 4/1 (Ladbrokes) Go to Ladbrokes now to bet on the next England captain
