Football odds: Champs Lg - Inter vs Liverpool
At a generous 4/1 Liverpool are the bet of the week to repeat the feats of Arsenal last week by winning at the San Siro against a Milan side. Along with Schalke 04, Inter were this column's tip to go all the way in the tournament this season but, for some reason, this is a trophy that continues to elude Roberto Mancini's men. Not since 1965 have the Italian giants won the European Cup and the defeat on Merseyside three weeks ago was further evidence that this is a side not suited to the competition. Inter kept their lead at the top of Serie A to six points on Saturday night and are on course for a third straight Scudetto success. However, the Anfield reverse triggered a run of four matches without a win before this weekend's 2-0 home success against troubled Reggina. The quality of the opposition notwithstanding, Saturday's win owed much to the return from injury of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who has been Inter's inspiration this season, and also Julio Cesar, who has probably been the best goalkeeper in Serie A this term, and who was again forced to make a string of spectacular saves. Since the win at Anfield, meanwhile, Liverpool's trajectory has gone in the opposite direction. Last year's Champions League finalists have won each of their four games since, scoring 13 goals in the process, more than half of which have come from the in-form Fernando Torres. The bookies have also neglected to consider Inter's defensive problems. Ivan Cordoba, who was injured in the first leg, is out for the rest of the season, along with Walter Samuel and the heart of the Nerazzurri rearguard is further decimated by the suspended Marco Materazzi, who was sent off early on against Liverpool. Cristian Chivu also injured his shoulder against Napoli last weekend, and although he will probably be strapped up to play, is not 100 per cent fit for the visit of Rafa Benitez's men. Julio Cesar will need to be at his best to thwart the penetrative and pacy Torres, as Liverpool look to catch their hosts on the break. This is just the sort of match in which Benitez's tactics will thrive and Inter, who turned 100 on Sunday, will most likely be feeling its age by the end of the match on Tuesday as Liverpool outplay the very side that invented catenaccio.
