HAYDOCK ON AUGUST 5 TOTE JACKPOT TIPS AND SELECTIONS
We've got a blockbuster day ahead of us at Haydock tomorrow as the Tote Jackpot has rolled over at Newcastle today and is now at £981,000! That's a life-changing amount of money and we've got plenty of smaller fields at Haydock on Thursday so I think the opportunity is ripe to strike lucky.
The 2:10 at Haydock is a class 5 dash going just over a mile. We've got a youthful card unfolding for most of the day and the opener is complicated by two debutante's Geblah (Green Desert) and Generous Genella (Cape Cross). Residence and Spa (Dubai Destination) is probably the most consistent runner and has gone 233 in his three lifetime starts. The connections have shifted him off jockey David Allan over to Paul Hanagan and the jock change might be the final key to him cracking that elusive maiden score. I do think Generous Genella is a big contender here though as this generation of Cape Cross offspring are emerging as a serious force to be reckoned with. I think this one is between the Darley-bred Generous Genella and Residence and Spa as an improver.
We've got class 4 fillies in the 2:40 at Haydock and we've got three contenders coming in off victories. Sweetie Time (Invincible Spirit) has a course and distance edge on the field here and should be sent off at much lower than the 11/1 she was listed at on her maiden score at Haydock. Tallahasse (Acclamation) is hitting at 100%, scoring on debut at Beverley last week. She may not be as fresh as you'd like though and may not be able to dig and find more coming into the final furlong. Turn The Tide (Footstepsinthesand) ran 11/22 in a Grade 3 at Ascot back in mid-June and acquitted herself well. The steep drop in company could pay dividends for a filly that looks to progress.
The 3:10 at Haydock is a class 5 contest going 6 furlongs. This is a very interesting handicap with Offspring (Olden Times) being the top-weight having just broke her maiden at Ripon a few weeks back. I think she's beatable though and I'm looking to Sir Louis (Compton Palace) and bottom-weight Reach for the Sky (Elusive City). I think Sir Louis is the choice here, he's only scored at 5f before, but drove home well that day. With a sharp earlier pace I think he could be the one to watch coming into the stretch. This is a tough one though.
The 3:40 Betfred Handicap is a class 3 affair going 1m30y. A number of talented runners jump off the sheet here with Beachamp Yorker (Compton Admiral) is well-regarded having topped out a field of 15 at Newbury on his only career run last September. It's been quite a layoff but I think the connections are confident here and he showed the ability to handle larger fields. Dolphin Rock (Mark of Esteem) is a there-or-thereabouts type who hasn't finished outside the top 3 since a tame effort at Wolverhampton last September. The Mia Racing-owned bay gelding has run 12312 in his five starts this year. Both strikes this year have come at a mile. Secretive (Shamardal) boasts a course and distance victory and some good results in the past but doesn't look at his best on soft ground. An outside bet here is Right Grand (Exceed and Excel) who is 912 lifetime and just missed in his last effort- a seasonal debut at Newmarket back in June.
The 4:10 is a class four route race going 1m3f and this is a very competitive race. Think It's All Over (Tiznow) steps up an extra furlong off his last effort- a winning race over the Haydock surface when he tackled a field of 6 with top jock Jamie Spencer. He kept on very well that day and will look to reproduce that form here. Cornish Beau (Pearl of Love) started this season with a bang, scoring a 1m4f victory at Pontefract back in April. He's been laid off since then, but I think this is the preferred distance for the chestnut. If you're looking to back an improver, try the up-and-coming Joseph Lister (Nayef) who has gone 632 in his three career starts.
The final race of the day is the 4:40 and we've got a 1m2f95y contest that should really separate the pretenders from the real quality. King Zeal (King's Best) looks the choice to me and he's got course and distance to his credit. He's rather heavily-raced this year but that doesn't seem to slow him down at all. He's taken three victories from eight races this year. Highland Love (Fruits of Love) has plenty of experience and has been hitting well lately, but I just think he gets outclassed here.
