Horseracing odds: Grand National meeting Day 2

The first day of the Aintree meeting went firmly the bookies' way as hotpots Inglis Drever and Kauto Star were beaten. Kauto Star was beaten at 4/7 on the line by Ryanair Chase winner Our Vic, while trainer Howard Johnson vowed that Inglis Drever would never return to Aintree again after he was overturned at 13/8 in the Long Distance hurdle. Punters therefore have a tricky conundrum with runaway Champion Chase winner Master Minded trading at as short as 2/7 for the Melling Chase (3.10pm). Despite his 19-length victory at Cheltenham last month, Master Minded has never won over 2m 4f, the distance of today's contest. There is no argument that he was sensational at Prestbury Park when winning the Champion Chase, but would you really back a horse at such short odds who was not guaranteed to last home? One horse who has a sensational record over such a distance however is Monet's Garden. Nicky Richards' grey has run over 20 furlongs on seven occasions in his career and won six times. He has some notable scalps on his CV, too, beating the likes of Monkerhostin, Taranis, and the great Kauto Star himself. Aintree also holds some special memories for Monet's Garden as he has won at the Liverpool track three times from five starts. He looks a massive price at 10/1, although each-way punters have not got a lot of room for manoeuvre as there are only seven runners, meaning just two places. Later on the card, the Topham (3.45pm) sees jockeys trial the National fences over 2m 5f, and Racing Post Plate runner-up Gwanko heads the bookies' lists at 8/1. Horses who have shown a liking for these special obstacles often run well when aimed at the fences once more, and Howard Johnson's Theatre Knight looks over-priced at 16/1 considering he ran second in this event last year. Theatre Knight also showed his liking for the National fences when running third to I Hear Thunder in the Grand Sefton in November 2006, and considering he has never been out of the places in three visits to Aintree, he looks sure to run a huge race.
