Ladbrokes St Leger Betting Tips
I have tried, and tried hard, to oppose Sixties Icon for the forthcoming Ladbrokes St Leger on September 9, but there really isn't a horse left in the remaining entries that looks capable of beating Jeremy Noseda's charge following the defection of Septimus, so the 6/4 on offer with Blue Square should be duly lapped up. This horse is bred to be good being by a Derby winner, Galileo, out of an Oaks heroine, Love Divine. And good he certainly is. He might even turn out to be better than good. Indeed, Sixties Icon was having just his fifth career start when coming from off the pace to easily land the BGC Stakes at Glorious Goodwood, continuing his profile of that of a horse that is progressing race on race. The colt has yet to race beyond a mile and a half, but the extra two furlongs of the Leger will hold no terrors at all. He settles and travels well during his races, acts on any going, and possesses a potent turn of foot. I am willing to stick my neck out and say that this horse will not be beaten in this contest, the world's oldest Classic. The horse that chased Sixties Icon home at Goodwood, Jadalee, subsequently landed a Listed race at that same track, franking the form. Marcus Tregoning's charge is set to re-oppose in the Leger, which is this year run at York while redevelopment work continues at Doncaster, but there is absolutely no reason whatsoever to think he can turn the tables. Doubts have been raised with regard to the participation of the winner and runner-up in the Great Voltigeur Stakes, Youmzain and Red Rocks, as each horses respective connections have expressed doubts as to whether their charges will see out the trip. Where Red Rocks is concerned this seems a valid concern, especially as the going is likely to be on the easy side, but such question marks seem bizarre where Youmzain is concerned. The Mick Channon-trained colt needed every yard of the twelve furlongs to get on top in the Great Voltiguer and, furthermore, he won over a stiff mile and five furlongs at Newmarket previously, and he wasn't stopping at the end of that race. I really cannot work out why his participation should be in the balance. Aidan O'Brien has won three of the last five renewals of this contest but, now that Septimus is out, it's hard to envisage him having a realistic chance of enhancing his record in this race this year. Mountain and Puerto Rico are both decent, but neither are Group 1 horses and will struggle against a potential top-notcher like Sixties Icon. Mark Johnston's Linas Selection is set to fly the flag for the Middleham handler following Soapy Danger's injury in the Great Voltigeur. This tough-as-teak colt should give it a good shot, but he was firmly put in his place when third to Sixties Icon at Goodwood and it will be a major surprise if he can avenge that defeat. verdict - 4pts Sixties Icon @ 6/4 (Blue Square)
