Things have certainly gotten very interesting in the last couple of days with the not-so-surprising sacking of Jose Mourinho coming just before things began to kick off in earnest.
An Australian newspaper appears to have accidentally leaked that Guus Hiddink has been brought back in to manage Chelsea in the absence of the Special One. Mourinho really looked to have lost the dressing room from the outset of the season when he became embroiled in controversy after controversy, which was always fine as long as his teams were winning on the pitch.
With Chelsea’s style of play seemingly held back severely by Mourinho’s attention obviously being elsewhere it really comes as no surprise that he was shown the door or “mutually agreed” as they tend to put it now.
Chelsea certainly still have the opportunity to remain in the hunt for a Champions League place and you’d reckon that they should have a genuine go at things whn you consider how much offensive firepower they have at their disposal. It’s not about needing new players or anything like that. It was clearly a crisis of management and Hiddink has shown his ability to steady the ship before.
It looks pretty clear that the Blues are well and truly out of it in terms of actually winning the English Premier League with the bookmakers listing them as high as a 250/1 margin to actually pull this off. That’s in sharp contrast to Manchester City who trade as a general 5/4 favourite to pull off another title victory. City’s only real competition appears to be the likes of Arsenal since Manchester United have failed to capitalize on the opportunities presented to them by their opponents. You’ll find Louis Van Gaal’s men priced as high as 10/1 to win the league.
