Liverpool vs Arsenal: Champions League - football odds
It's Groundhog Day on Tuesday as the final instalment of the Liverpool v Arsenal trilogy concludes with both sides seeing if they can avoid a 1-1 draw for the first time. While the two sides met again in the Premier League on Saturday, there is little that can be gleaned from that result, as a raft of key players were rested. And having held the Gunners twice away from home he will be hopeful of securing the goalless draw or win at Anfield that will take his side through to the Champions League semi-finals for the third time in four years. The Spaniard's record in the Champions League, the away goal from the first leg and the intimidating atmosphere at Anfield has led the bookies to make Liverpool favourites. But these odds are curiously overlooking one key detail: Arsenal are the better side. Quite how the Reds came away from the Emirates last week with a 1-1 draw only God, or possibly Nicklas Bendtner, knows. Arsenal were denied a clear penalty, dominated possession, carved out several gilt-edged opportunities, the most calamitous of which saw Bendtner clear team-mate Cesc Fabregas's shot off the line, and came away with nothing to show for it save for a score draw. That Liverpool scored from their only shot on goal is evidence that they have the game to stifle opponents and then finish them off with a sucker punch. It is also true that the Reds are a different prospect on home soil, as they proved when beating Everton 10 days ago in a one-sided derby. However, with a Champions League away goal to protect it is difficult to expect Benitez to adopt any approach other than to defend in numbers - as they did in the first leg. And they cannot expect to be so lucky twice in a row. Liverpool's favouritism is misjudged because Arsenal always score - and when, as can be safely assumed, they Gunners do find the net at Anfield, Liverpool's gameplan will have to change to a more offensive approach - which will leave gaps for the visitors to exploit. Given that the last four head-to-heads between these two sides have finished 1-1, it is tempting to expect more of the same again. But, despite their recent blip in the Premier League, the resilience of this Arsenal side has been underestimated all season. A goal will turn the balance of this fascinating Champions League fixture on its head and the Gunners are too good to resist.
