Liverpool vs Manchester City: Preview, Odds and Betting Tips - 16 October 2022 (Premier League)

Haaland to set another record

It's not a derby, but it has become the biggest game in all of England.

Over the past five years, Liverpool and Manchester City have dominated England and have also raised the stock of English football in Europe.

It is a game that is now likened to El Clasico, the eternal battle between Real Madrid and Barcelona of Spain, which is billed as the biggest fixture in world football.

Premier League fans are now gearing up for their own Clasico with Jürgen Klopp's Reds playing hosts to Pep Guardiola's Cityzens at Anfield on October 16, 2022. It is the first of the two Premier League meetings between these two English behemoths for the 2022/23 season.

There is a difference this time around, however. Manchester City have gone and gotten themselves a certain Norwegian who scores with every touch he takes. And Liverpool have also moved a certain Senegalese hard worker on, replacing him with a Uruguayan whose talents are among the best in the world.

But it doesn't stop there. And the form guides of the two teams below will give you a glimpse into what to expect.

Form Guide: Liverpool

Liverpool currently sit in ninth place on the Premier League table after eight gameweeks. They do have a game in hand though, due to the postponement of their gameweek 7 match following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, queen of England.

You do not need to be an active football fan to know that ninth place for Liverpool is quite unusual. It is the lowest they have been on the table after this many games in more than seven years. It just so happens that this poor run of form coincides with Jürgen Klopp's seventh year in charge of the Merseysiders and if you know the man's managerial history, you will agree that this is not unusual under the German.

Liverpool have found it hard to get into gear in all their Premier League games this season with their game against Bournemouth being the exception. They have had to come back to earn a draw on four different occasions and also had to come back to win in one of their two victories this season.

At this point, they are not ready for the Manchester City test.

Form Guide: Manchester City

Manchester City sit in second place on the Premier League table simply because they let the ball drop against Newcastle United in their third game of the season and against Aston Villa in their fifth game of the season.

They have scored the most goals and created the most chances. They also have the league's top scorer and top assister in their ranks, both of whom are surely going to win the Golden Boot and Playmaker of the Year awards.

They are averaging three goals per game in the league while letting in a few, as happens with most hyper-attacking teams. Everything is set up for them to defend their Premier League title this season and winning the upcoming Liverpool game is going to be a big leap towards that goal.

What to expect from the match

Expect goals from both teams in their numbers. A rout by Manchester City is very likely based on the form of Liverpool, but the Reds do not give up easily. They also will want to prove a big point by holding down the rampaging Cityzens.

In short, Manchester City are the favourites and Liverpool are back to being the underdogs they once were in this fixture a little more than three years ago.

Both teams to score

Liverpool are not shy of goal scorers even though they have struggled to get things going in that department this season. Manchester City, on the other hand, have Erling Haaland, who has already smashed a number of Premier League goal-scoring records in only eight games.

It will be a case, however, of who outscores the other because while a City goal(s) is certain, a clean sheet is the farthest thing from them at the moment. William Hill are offering odds of 6/4 (2.50) for both teams to score at least a goal.

Over 3.5 goals

The last few matches between both teams have ended in at least three goals being scored between them. While the winner may be hard to decide upon, it is certain that both will have a go at each other and score more than three goals combined. William Hill are offering odds of 14/15 (1.93) for both teams to score at least three goals and it’s worth a shout.

Erling Haaland to score

At this point, it will be insane to bet against this outcome in any game that the Norwegian international gets to start. We're going to leave it at that. You can barely go wrong with this tip and it needs no explanation why should you back it to happen.
