LIVERPOOL VS STEAUA BUCHAREST- TORRES FAVOURED TO SCORE
Liverpool will attempt to put their rather mediocre Premiership form aside tonight as they open their European League account against Romania’s Steaua Bucharest at the ever- intimidating Anfield
On the Liverpool team news end- defender Paul Konchesky should be fit to face the Romanian contingent, despite failing to last 90 minutes against Birmingham at the weekend.
Dirk Kuyt once again misses out on a run, struggling to bounce back from a shoulder problem with there being continued doubt over left-back Fabio Aurelio, who is struggles with an Achilles injury.
Liverpool will feel some form of relief on the back of knowing that they are not the only team feeling the heat, with Steaua having dropped to third place in the Romanian league after losing to Unirea Urziceni at the weekend.
Despite their current mediocre form Liverpool are still hot favourites to dispose of Bucharest with Betfair putting them at 1.46 favourites, to the Romanian’s 8.8.
With many assuming this to be a matchup of two quality teams out of form with everything to play for, there are indeed some great deals to be had.
On the score prediction front a 1-0 Liverpool win will net 7.0, while a 2-0 win will get you 6.4. If Bucharest were to win this match, a somewhat limited strike force would most likely see them doing so by a thin margin.
There are some great odds to be had though, with a 1-0 win to the Romanians coming in at 21, and a very unlikely 2-0 win at 70!
After the barrage of criticism that the clubs front line has received over the past three weeks, one can safely assume that there will be no lack of inspiration to perform. Couple this with an expectant Reds home-crowd and one would assume that a 3-0 win at 10 even is not out of the question.
All eyes are on Fernando Torres tonight as the striker deals with a barrage of criticism questioning his enthusiasm in playing for an English side. With whispers around Anfield suggesting that he is keen to make the move back to his native homeland, Torres will be keen to get out and perform
No surprises then that William Hill have put Torres as favourite to open at 3.25, with a very safe 1.5 to score at any time in the game. Gerrard is at 2.2, with Joe Cole at 2.5- Cole loves the big occasion and tonight provides just that
On the Bucharest end, Romanian local Romeo Surdu is favoured to trouble the Reds at 4.5, with rather enticing odds of 11.0 to open
Many are watching in anticipation as to whether Hodgson will be putting out a top side, or whether he might be resting some of the more high profile names in anticipation of this weekend’s trip to Old Trafford and a meeting with Manchester United.
However, one must assume that Hodgson, regardless of his unquestionable pedigree, will be feeling the heat to perform and will be fielding the best of the best in order to kick-start an otherwise unimpressive season thus far.
The Reds should take this one...with a 3-0 convincing win being a very likely result
