MANCHESTER UNITED VS BAYERN MUNICH 2ND LEG CHAMPIONS LEAGUE BETTING TIPS
A week is an awful long time in football. Just ask Sir Alex Ferguson. Only seven days ago Manchester United were sitting pretty at the top of the Premier League table and were red-hot favourites to progress to the semi-final of the Champions League. Today they are two points behind leaders Chelsea in the league, a goal to the worse in their Champions League quarter-final tie and without their talisman Wayne Rooney due to injury.
There had been murmurings in the media that Rooney would make a spectacular recovery and be available for selection for tonight’s game, but murmurings were all they turned out to be. Ferguson has stated that he will not risk his star-man for 90 minutes, although didn’t categorically rule out the possibility of him starting the game on the bench.
The problem with having one player who is playing so well throughout a season is that if and when he is unavailable you have to change your style of play almost immediately. United had become so accustomed to Rooney’s movement up front that now that he is not there, and nobody can replicate him, they have to look for unfamiliar ways to break down the opposition defence. Not as simple as it sounds, particularly in the elitist surroundings of the Champions League.
United can be backed at 1.8 (4/5) with Betfair and although that may seem short given Rooney’s absence, they do have a habit of getting things right when it matters, especially at Old Trafford. However, I’d be more inclined to back them at the odds of 2.04 (evens) that is available on them to qualify for the semis; although they aren’t quite the same thing Bayern Munich would have to score twice for United to win and not go through.
It also makes sense to back the 2.1 (11/10) that is available on ‘Under 2.5 goals’, United do have that crucial away goal under their belt and if they can stop Munich from scoring then they will fancy their chances of progressing with a 1-0 or 2-0 victory.
And who will get that all important goal? Well I’ll be looking to Park Ji-Sung – 12/1 to score the first goal and 7/2 to score anytime with Bet365 – to be the hero, he is Ferguson’s big game player and he always puts in a good box-to-box shift when requested to do so. Visions of him sliding in at the back post or throwing his head in front of a defender’s flailing boot are fresh in the memory.
This is a big test for United, but they are the masters of bouncing back after bouts of adversity. Rooney should be back for the semi-finals should they get there, but they have to prove that they can win important games without him in order to have the right to be considered in Europe’s top four teams.
