Obviously, Manchester United’s thrashing at the hands of arch-rivals Manchester City is going to be one of the bigger talking points and it really snuffed out the momentum that David Moyes had built up after conquering Bayer Leverkusen by a 4-2 margin exactly a week ago. After looking poised in Europe, United were then completely exposed in a fixture that matters much more when they sent a Robin Van Persie-less side to Eastlands and were promptly taken to the woodpile.
While Wayne Rooney placed the blame on the players inadequate performance, the real story on everybody’s lips was how David Moyes got the tactics all wrong on the day. While there really wasn’t much he could do about Van Persie being interested, he played two out of sorts wingers who were quickly taken apart by their counterparts at Manchester City.
The aging duo of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic looked a touch off the pace and it has been noted that Moyes seems reluctant to play Jonny Evans in matches that really matter - he is going to need to pass the torch on at some point and if he doesn’t trust Evans then you will have to wonder how that affects the confidence of the young lad.
Simply put, Moyes must win this League Cup match today to put out the fire that was stoked last Sunday. In one of the most disappointing fixtures since the 6-1 drubbing a while back, United fans will demand a quality and poised performance from both the players and the manager himself.
