MANCHESTER UNITED VS SCUNTHORPE- NEWS, PREVIEW AND ODDS
Carling Cup holders Manchester United travel to Glanford Park tonight in one of the most one-sided games in the Third Round
The event does have its significance in that it will be the first time that the two clubs clash in competitive action.
You will struggle to find anyone giving the Scunthorpe outfit half a chance, coming up against a side that has lifted the trophy in three of the last five seasons, with this result basically a foregone conclusion
Despite calls for him not to alter the side much heading east, Ferguson will very likely use the game as an opportunity to rest some of his more high profile names- notably hat-trick hero from last weekend Dimitar Berbatov
With word already getting out that the Red Devils will include Michael Owen in the starting line up, instead of Rooney, the main question lies in whether it will be either Ferderico Macheda or wunderkind Javier Hernandez partnering him up front.
Along with this, Ferguson is also expected to give £7m winger Bebe his first run, as well as French winger Gabriel Obertan.
Scunthorpe on the other hand have more problems off the field than on, with the club being in somewhat of a team management crisis, having recently lost manager Nigel Adkins to Southampton.
The team’s season has been somewhat topsy-turvy thus far, having won three and lost four in the Championship so far.
As Ferguson is viewing this as an opportunity to rotate his more high profile players, as well as give starts to some of the fringe contingent, the odds on this clash are slightly more liberal than would normally be the case.
William Hill have United set to win at 1/8, against that of Scunthorpe at 9/2
On the goalscoring front Scunthorpe's Chris Dagnall is favoured for the Irons, having scored four times in all competitions thus far at 7/2. Fellow frontman and striker Jonathan Forte is up next at 4/1, and 11/1 to open proceedings.
For Manchester, Owen is odds on favourite to open at 7/2, and score at any point at evens. One would think that this is as safe a bet as you will find, and bar injury, Owen will get at least one.
Hernandez shows his class in being labelled as evens, with the ever talented Macheda following suit.
There can be only one result in this match, and that is a United win.
Clubs of this size and stature can field a second XI that are capable of challenging the world best, and Scunthorpe simply do not fall into this category.
Betting Tip: Owen to score at any time at evens- double your money
