New approach 9/1 for 2,000 Guineas
Betfair punters who have made New Approach 9/1 favourite for next year's 2,000 Guineas, after a three-length Futurity Stakes win at The Curragh on Saturday, will be hoping comparisons with his former stablemate Teofilo won't extend to him missing next year's Classics. Layers who have opposed him at double-figure prices may just disagree, though. New Approach was introduced into the Betfair market after his successful debut on July 15, and he was immediately supported at 33/1. It has been all one-way trading traffic since then as comparisons with Teofilo and his rise up the juvenile pecking order have continued. Some punters took 13/2 in the immediate aftermath of Saturday's impressive victory - the lowest price taken about any of the 2,000 Guineas hopefuls on the exchange - before settling at 9/1. Impressive Goodwood winner Rio De La Plata is a 10/1 chance, with soft-ground lover and Morny victor Myboycharlie available at 12/1 and the unbeaten July Stakes scorer Winker Watson, owned by the Comic Strip Heroes syndicate which features Betfair co-founders Andrew Black and Ed Wray, on the same mark. Betfair spokesman Tony Calvin said: "I suppose I should be saying, with my Betfair hat on, that Winker Watson should be favourite. But there is no doubt that New Approach looks a formidable juvenile at this stage. "However, Rio De La Plata was so impressive in the Vintage Stakes that I'm surprised Betfair punters aren't making him the 2,000 Guineas favourite." To win the 2008 Stan James 2,000 Guineas: 9/1 New Approach, 10/1 Rio De Plata, 12/1 Myboycharlie, Winker Watson, 18/1 Fast Company (Betfair). Prices correct as at 10am on August 26.
