Newcastle United can upset West Brom at Hawthorns
- By Drew Swainston on December 3, 2010 11:04 GMTThese two were the top two teams in the Championship last season and sit tied on 19 points in the table so it promises to be a close match between two even teams.
Newcastle United bounced back from their thrashing at Bolton to earn a respectable draw at St James Park with Chelsea. Their goal in the game came courtesy of man-of-the-hour Andy Carroll and fans will look to him to inspire the side to their first win in five games at the Hawthorns. They are priced at 12/5 to get the win.
Last season in the Championship the sides balanced each other out, with a 1-1 and a 2-2 draw and another draw is priced at 12/5, so but Newcastle have won six of eight Premier League meetings with West Bromwich Albion, with the other two games being drawn.
Roberto Di Matteo's side have shown they are capable of ripping up the formbook this season and they shocked Everton with a 4-1 win at Goodison Park last weekend, but then went and lost to Championship side Ipswich in the Carling Cup in midweek.
After starting the season in scintillating form, West Brom have dropped down the table and before the Everton win had only taken one points from 15. The Hawthorns has not been a happy place for home fans recently as West Brom have not scored there in three hours and 50 minutes of Premier League football., and they are 13/10 to win.
Newcastle have blown hot and cold so far this season, so fans will be hoping the right side turns up on Sunday. They have seen thumping wins be followed by big losses – with an average of 1.71 goals conceded per game away from St James Park.
Carroll may have scored four goals in his last five games and is 11/2 to open the scoring, but no other Magpie player has found the back of the net in that time and the likes of Shola Ameobi or Kevin Nolan need to step up and contribute if they want to take all three points from this game. Chris Hughton will welcome Joey Barton back after the midfielder's suspension and he will look for the former Manchester City man to get back to the form he was showing before his stint on sidelines.
The defensive combination of Steven Taylor and Sol Campbell looked impressive standing in for Fabricio Collicini and Mike Williamson last weekend against Chelsea and they could look to soak up West Brom pressure and look to hit their opponents on the break – which may be a risky manoeuvre against a side that have beaten Arsenal and drawn with Manchester United so far this season.
