The Blues are expected to name a replacement quickly and we’re likely to get the announcement today. De Matteo did boast the support of the players and there definitely seems to be an overriding sense of sympathy for the manager who did, ultimately, deliver the Champions League to Chelsea.
One does have to wonder how long the new manager is going to actually be around. With Andre Villas-Boas and Roberto De Matteo both staying in the job for only a few months - Chelsea will be looking towards a long term hire.
Rafa Benitez is considered to be the odds-on favourite for the position with the bookmakers listing him at a slim 1/2 price tag to get the nod and take over at Stamford Bridge. Most will remember his controversial tenure at Liverpool and some might also wonder whether he will wind up being an alienating force at Chelsea - particularly if he doesn’t start well.
De Matteo had the support of the players and if they can’t get behind Rafa’s technique and mentality then this one could wind up going from bad to worse quickly.
Some bookmakers have Benitez as short as 1/8 but punters will still find the best price with William Hill.
The other contenders for the position include Pep Guardiola, who is said to be on a one-year hiatus from football and is currently living in New York City. He trades at a 2/1 price to take the Chelsea job.
Harry Redknapp trades at a 7/1 price tag to be nominated at Chelsea manager but that’s where we start getting into serious long shot territory. David Moyes sits at 20/1 while Marcelo Bielsa is available at the same price.
No Chelsea manager has lasted a year since Mourinho left. Jose is 25/1 to retake the reigns at Chelsea.
