Words hit the media soon after that a number of England legends were lobbying for Wayne Rooney to be given the title. He has captained England at various times when called upon, usually in friendly matches when other players were being rested or were out injured.
Making Wayne Rooney the permanent captain of the England team would be logical for many but might prove controversial for many England fans. Rooney has never really excelled at International level since he first emerged on the scene in 2004 but even that was undone by a red card for stamping on Ricardo Carvalho as England went down on penalties to the Portuguese.
The majority of Rooney’s goals have come against much smaller sides like Estonia and Andorra but it’s going to be interesting to see if the logic behind the appointment will be that the captaincy might finally galvanize Rooney to put his head down and really start banging in the goals.
Many believed that he is in line to be Manchester United captain but the honor will likely now go to Robin Van Persie and the presence of Louis Van Gaal will only exacerbate that. With three former captains Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra all either gone or set to leave, this opens up another door for the next generation of United talent.
This season also saw Ryan Giggs take on the role of assistant manager following a four-match stint as player-manager after the sacking of David Moyes.
