NEXT ENGLAND CAPTAIN LATEST ODDS SHOW WAYNE ROONEY AS JOHN TERRYS REPLACEMENT
After a highly-controversial few days for England captain John Terry, his family, and unfortunate Wayne Bridge it seems as though a number of England fans are beginning to question whether John Terry has the mettle (and the credibility) to continue on as England captain in this, a world cup year.
Despite scoring at the weekend, Terry was resoundingly booed and the radio call-in shows after the matches left even less to the imagination. It has become very clear that a section of the English footballing public no longer want a man lacking that moral fibre to be considered a national talisman.
If the betting markets on Betfair are to be believed, then it looks like John Terry should weather the storm and remain as England captain. However, the big variable for me, is the fact that he is not laid at an odds-on price. Terry trades at 2.3, which I consider lengthy in this type of a bet. Betting for something to not happen is generally always priced shorter than betting on something specific to happen, and with Terry listed at odds this long it actually gives me a few more question marks than it should.'
Another issue dogging John Terry at the moment is the mercurial talents of young Wayne Rooney, who has been in absolutely impeccable form for club and country over the past while. This is England’s focal point on the pitch and, in a stunning stroke of pre-World Cup marketing, Wayne Rooney could be named as the next England captain. The media would certainly love it, and the biggest aspect of all of this is just how plausible it seems to be. Wayne Rooney trades at a slim 3.05 (just 0.8 higher than Terry) to be named the next England captain. I don’t think doubts remain over Rooney’s maturity or temperament anymore- I think him leading from the front in South Africa could be a tactical masterstroke, but the fans won’t get to decide this- it’s Fabio Capello’s choice and his only.
The other candidates include Steven Gerrard at 5.4, Rio Ferdinand at 7.4 (that drugs ban a while back will ensure he never becomes England captain) while Frank Lampard trades at 13.5. Lampard is a great player, but not captain material. The underwhelming presence of Gareth Barry would garner a 22.0 price, while the long-shot option here is David Beckham who sits at 30.0. If the Terry situation really does come to a head and, for some reason Rooney is over-looked, then I think the only other possible captain could be David Beckham- he’s held the role before and done (reasonably) well with it. If Beckham was appointed, it would likely on be as an interim captain that would see the team through to the end of World Cup 2010.
Things could be going from bad to worse for John Terry. And Wayne Rooney looks set to capitalize.
