- By A.J. Ryder on October 3, 2016 18:02 GMTAfter the spectacular and sudden departure of Sam Allardyce – a man who now exits his term as England manager with a 100% win record (stemming from just a single game) – we are now faced with a search for his successor with the shadow of World Cup 2018 qualification looming large in the background.

The sting investigation saw Allardyce actively seeking different and contracdictory employment that violated his terms with the FA.While there was obviously no criminal wrongdoing or anything like that, the fact remained that the optics of the situation were extremely negative for all parties involved so you have to admit that his ouster was probably the right move for everybody involved in the evolving matter.
You must feel, in a way, for Allardyce having wanted the England job and always boasted about how he should have been managing one of the big clubs like AC Milan or Real Madrid – many of us (including a number of Big Sam's fans) dismissed that as hubris. He seems to have backed up those feeling with his gigantic cock-up a single game after actually making it onto the big stage and getting the reigns of the England job.
Looking ahead, however, we have to start assuming who the next manager will be and there is every chance that the FA will continue to go with their “English first” mentality, which may not really be the way forward here since that's what led us to Allardyce in the first place.
The ranking favourite right now is interim manager Gareth Southgate who seems to fit the bill for pretty much everything despite not actually really boasting a very successful managerial career. However, he is still finding his feet as a manager and has the credibility of being an established and respected member of the England side for a number of years and his tactical acumen seems to be good – he just lacks a lot of experience and the requisite success tha comes with that experience.
