NEXT LIVERPOOL MANAGER ODDS SHOW O'NEILL HODGSON AND DALGLISH IN DEAD-HEAT
It's getting more interesting by the day in the betting markets for the next Liverpool manager. The volume is already quite heavy for this type of market and if this thing drags on then there are definitely more wild swings in store.
Originally it looked like Martin O'Neill had the gig locked up and he trades as low as the 3.0 region but now you're looking at a 5.5 price on the open market at Betfair. I think you can blame the increased volume for the price increase, but I also think his reluctance to declare interest in the job may finally be showing.
Roy Hodgson remains a solid option and he's at 5.2, which is a there-or-thereabouts price for him and he's been hovering around that since the market opened. I think he's a plausible contender- you know he'd leave Fulham for Liverpool and you know Fulham would let him go. I think the Liverpool front office is likely looking for value as opposed to a blockbuster signing so Roy Hodgson may be the choice.
Kenny Dalglish is the weird option here and fans seem convinced that he's in with a shout- he's now priced at 5.4 which places him in a virtual dead-heat with the other two contenders. The issue is that he's the only leading the search for the next Liverpool manager and I just don't know whether he'd come out and appoint himself. Definitely the romantic option, but I seriously don't think Liverpool will go in this direction as it's a big Kevin Keegan-y, if you get my drift.
Guus Hiddink and Jurgen Klinsmann have both seen their prices nearly double- they are trading around the 28.0 mark at this point. Harry Redknapp is priced awfully short at 18.0, but he seriously wouldn't leave Spurs since getting them into fourth spot. Sven Goran Eriksson has declared interest in the job, but he's priced in Redknapp territory at 16.0.
Mark Hughes is an outside bet at 22.0, but I just can't see him managing Liverpool. I also think the Kop faithful would turn on the owners even more if Sven Goran Eriksson was the selection.
It's going to be a very interesting betting market and it could be a while before the appointment of the next Liverpool manager actually happens. There's some great backing and laying opportunities available, but its anyone's guess at this point.
