Real Madrid vs Valladolid
Last week I warned about the potential for <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Valladolid to spring a shock in the first leg of their third round Kings Cup tie against Real Madrid. There was no shock, although the second division outfit did hold their more illustrious opponents to a goalless draw. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> Once again caution is advised for those looking to back Madrid to win in the second leg on Wednesday evening. New coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo is likely once again to go with the fringe players from his squad. Leading the Real attack will most likely be Michael Owen, who for the third time this season must attempt to persuade a manager, he is worthy of a regular starting berth. Luxemburgo is the third person to be in charge at the Bernabeu this season. When the first manager came in the England striker was a sub and gradually played more and more. Then, with the second manager, it was exactly the same. It is ironic that despite his role as a sub, Owen boasts the best goals ratio in Spain with one every 110 minutes. Against Valladolid, the former Liverpool player will aim to improve on that ratio and strengthen his case for a place in the first choice line-up. While the opposition will be inferior to that of the regular weekend opposition from La Liga, so unfortunately will the players alongside Owen. It is unlikely the major players such as Ronaldo, Raul, Figo and Zidane will be used. Nevertheless, Owen is the type of striker that can survive off a basic ration of chances. We know this from his Liverpool days when the style of play was hardly tailor made for attacking play, yet Owen still scored his fair share. Whether Real Madrid win or not against Valladolid, there is a strong possibility that Owen will score at some point. It is therefore worthwhile taking a small piece of the 5/6 Stan James are offering on the Englishman to find the back of the net. The match can be seen live on Sky Sports.
