SAME SEX MARRIAGE FAVOURED FOR CALIFORNIA ACCORDING TO IRISH BOOKMAKER
Popular Irish bookmaker Paddy Power has always made a name for themselves with their wide assortment of novelty and political betting that they make available for puters in the UK and Ireland. Never one to stray away from controversial topics, the Irish bookies have a great record in predicting political events- even those happening half a world away.
The odds on same-sex marriage being legal in California by September 2011 are currently considered to be a total toss-up with odds of 5/6 going on the yes or no options. The bet is based on whether or not same sex marriage licenses can be legally obtained throughout the state of California by September 1, 2011.
They have also released a slightly more telling market that indicates just how likely gay marriage is to be in California come 2015. Currently it looks like a 50/50 chance that same-sex individuals will be able to marry by 2011, but the odds on a 2015 legalization of same-sex marriage look to be incredibly short.
The odds on Same-sex marriage being legal in California by December 31, 2015 are priced at 1/4, which means that a £100 wager would pay out at £125. When you are only getting a 25% profit on your wager, it always means that the bookmakers consider it to be extremely likely.
A £100 bet on gay marriage to be legalized in California by September 2011 would pay out at a £183.33.
Interestingly enough, the Irish bookie also has odds available on the upcoming California governors race- Jerry Brown and Meg Whitman are considered to be dead-even at the moment, with both options paying out at 5/6.
And yes, just in case you're wondering, Barack Obama is the favourite to win the 2012 Presidency with Paddy Power listing him at an 8/11 price. Mitt Romney is a strong second favourite at 6/1 while (wait for it...) Sarah Palin is trading at a 10/1 price tag. Paris Hilton's odds to be US President in 2012 are currently listed at 1000/1, ironically the same odds as Laura Bush.
