Stars to win back places?
After two wins from two in the recent Euro 2008 qualifiers, pressure is now on certain superstar players to regain their positions in England's starting line-up. William Hill have opened a book on whether two England stars missing from recent line-ups will be back in the eleven for the next Euro qualifier against Estonia on October 13. Hills rate Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard 8/13 to get back in and 6/5 not to; with former captain David Beckham 6/4 to start the game and 1/2 not to. "It is by no means a foregone conclusion that either of these two will be put straight back in after the settled side performed so well in the two matches," said Hill's spokesman Graham Sharpe. "Steve McClaren could be accused of reverting to type should he discard the likes of Gareth Barry and Shaun Wright-Phillips who have done little wrong since they came into the team. "However, given the influence these players wield, and the pressure McClaren is likely to come under to bring them back, we are prepared to offer 7/1 about England lining up with an unchanged side.' The firm are also offering odds of 4/11 that David Beckham WILL reach a total of one hundred or more England caps, and 2/1 that he will not. Hills also offer evens that Becks will start another game for England in 2007, 8/11 that he will not and 5/2 that the national side will win all their remaining Euro qualifiers. "England's improved displays against Israel and Russia without him, have been bad news for Becks and his supporters and it is looking more and more difficult for McClaren to get him back into the starting line-up" said Sharpe. "However, it would be no great surprise if the FA lined up a string of friendlies just to make sure he gets the ton!" Elsewhere Manchester City defender Micah Richards is 2/5 to start England's next game at right back, according to Ladbrokes. And the youngster, whose impressive recent displays have earned rave reviews, is 6/1 to fill in at centre-back. Ladbrokes spokesman, Nick Weinberg, said: "Richards has impressed at international level. Whilst ultimately he may end up playing centre-half, for the time being the number two shirt looks to be his." Richards is 7/2 to start on the bench and 10/1 to be omitted from the squad.
