That was the weekend that was

Rugby Union: England humiliate WalesBrian Ashton's side ran out easy winners at Twickenham after thrashing Wales 62-5 courtesy of Nick Easter's four tries and five other scores. The win saw the odds on England defending the World Cup shorten and they are now as short as 16/1 from 25s with Sporting Odds, leapfrogging Ireland in the process. F1: Hamilton goes clearLewis Hamilton soared clear of team-mate Fernando Alonso after winning the Hungarian Grand Prix. The weekend was not without incident as Alonso was penalised after Saturday's final practise for holding up his teammate and preventing Hamilton's final qualifying lap. As a result Hamilton was given pole and the Englishman made no mistake on Sunday to go seven points clear at the top of the standings. Football: United win Community ShieldManchester United took first bragging rights of the season by beating their main rivals for the title in the traditional season curtain-raiser. The league champions won the match on penalties after the game had ended 1-1 after normal time. United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar then saved all three penalties he faced from Chelsea players and United had their hands on their first trophy this season. Our betsThe good: We made a nine-point gain by backing Tiger Woods at 3/1 to win the Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone and the world No 1 duly obliged with an eight-shot victory as he warmed up nicely for this week's final major - the US PGA. Lewis Hamilton put a smile on our faces with a magnificent double in Hungary. Not only did he secure pole at 3/1 giving us a six-point profit he also then went on to win the Grand Prix at 7/2 - a 13-point gain overall. The bad: Sussex would have fancied their chances after seeing Twenty20 favourties Lancashire downed in their semi-final but Chris Adam's men could not make the final as they lost to eventual winners Kent. Unfortunately our money was on Sussex so we were left 3pts out of pocket. The ugly: our editor thinks that rugby is his game but with his tips at the weekend we think he needs to look elsewhere! He fancied a scrappy affair with Wales hanging on to get within 10 points of England at Twickenham. They lost by 57 and we lost 1pt. The week aheadFootball: Look out for our betting advice this week on all things football as the English leagues kick off this weekend as well as the Bundesliga in Germany. Golf: There is the last major of the year to make up any losses on your golf profits, can Tiger Woods finish the year with a major success? Rugby: England take on France at Twickenham in their penultimate warm-up game ahead of the World Cup. Can they repeat last weekend's thrashing of Wales or are they in for a much more galling battle? Cricket: England must win the third Test against India so that Michael Vaughan can defend his proud achievement of never losing a home series. Look out for all the lowdown on this and everything else that happens in the world of sports betting this week.
