The Oaks preview: horseracing betting

Very rarely in racing do you, as a punter, look at a horse's form, time and again, and question, why is it such a big price? Looking at the field for this year's Epsom Oaks, the filly in question is called Look Here. Click here for a free £200 to bet on the Oaks with Canbet The mount of Seb Sanders (always a good jockey to have on your side) took the scalp of Doctor Freemantle last year in a maiden at Salisbury on good to soft. This is the same Doctor Freemantle that is trained by Sir Michael Stoute and is owned by Khalid Abdullah, who recently stumped up the required £75,000 to supplement his colt for the Derby. The same Doctor Freemantle that won the Chester Vase so impressively, and the colt who is as short as 8/1 for the Derby. And it wasn't as if Doctor Freemantle wasn't fancied that day in Wiltshire. Sent off the 1/3 favourite, the Sadler's Wells colt was clearly outpointed by a better rival. Look Here was then put away for the winter, before being downed at Lingfield on her seasonal bow by Miracle Seeker, who re-opposes once more. Miracle Seeker won purely from a fine front-running performance by jockey Adam Kirby that day, and if you look at that contest objectively, Look Here was given all sorts of trouble during the race. She was squeezed for room on leaving the stalls, found taking the bend on the wide outside too much for her, and only when she got a clear run in the final few furlongs did she motor home, without having quite enough to catch Kirby's charge. It was a sensational performance, especially when you consider that the race took place on Look Here's unfavoured good to firm going, and with her stamina assured being from a family boasting Hernando and Rainbow Quest, both out-and-out 12 furlong horses, Look Here looks almost certain to stay every yard of the mile and a half. And her price? 40/1. It is a ludicrous price, and one which demands you get your mouse going and bet immediately. Obviously there are contenders who are fancied better by the bookmakers, none more so that Lush Lashes, who won the Musidora Stakes at York. It was a striking performance on the Knavesmire - she won by five lengths from Cape Amber, who also makes the Oaks' line-up - and she is the worthy 3/1 favourite. Others who demand consideration are Michita, Clowance and the unbeaten Chinese White, who pundits continue to discount due to her so-called inexperience, despite their being five others who have run the same number of races as the daughter of Dalakhani. Sure, there are statistically more likely winners than Look Here, but if you want to back a horse who has a solid chance of winning as odds that are simply too big, then snap up the 40/1 and you could be celebrating a monster win before the weekend has even started.
