The Prince Of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot at York
The Prince Of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot at York on Wednesday 15th June is undoubtedly the most fascinating race of the week. Last year's St James's Palace Stakes winner Azamour, who also added the Irish Champion Stakes to his haul in 2004, takes on last year's undisputed champion filly Ouija Board. This duo trade both at around the 2-1 mark and are worthy of joint favouritism, but it wouldn't do to overlook Godolphin's Doyen, who could be drastically overpriced at 4-1 with Ladbrokes. The son of Sadler's Wells looked a potential world-beater when dotting up in the Hardwicke Stakes at this meeting last year, before turning the King George VI Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes into a procession the following month. That was arguably the most spectacular display by a horse over middle distances last season and while some may question the overall form, as one or two in behind that day failed to run their race, I reckon that he still may turn out to be something really special. It is slightly concerning that he has yet to score over the Prince Of Wales's 10-furlong trip. However, he had both the Hardwicke and the King George won a long way out, suggesting that he has the necessary pace to prove equally effective over this trip. The prevailing fast ground will suit the Saeed bin Suroor-trained five-year-old and he is taken to put his below par efforts in the Irish and English Champion Stakes behind him by getting back on track with a decisive victory.Azamour is also suited by top of the ground and rates the main danger to the selection. He had a below-par Doyen back in seventh when producing a tenacious display to beat Norse Dancer in the Irish Champion Stakes last September. John Oxx's charge had Doyen just under five lengths behind there and meets that rival on 7lb worse terms so, even if Doyen was to reproduce that disappointing effort, strictly on the form he is still entitled to turn the tables with the winner.Azamour was a shade unlucky in running when two lengths fourth of six to Grey Swallow in Tattersalls Gold Cup at The Curragh last month where he was short of room a furlong out. Whether he would have beaten the winner is, in my opinion, most doubtful, although he may well have finished closer.Ouija Board was imperious against her own sex last season, easily landing the Oaks, before adding the Irish Oaks and the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare turf to her gains. Before her memorable victory in the last-named event, she ran a cracking race to finish one-and-a-half-lengths third to Bago in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in which she finished with a rattle after encountering traffic problems two furlongs out. That performance demonstrated that the daughter of Cape Cross is more than capable of holding her own against the colts. However, she appears to be more effective on good going, as opposed to out-and-out fast ground, so there is a chance that she may be caught flat footed initially when the screws is turned. She will definitely be finishing to good effect, but Doyen and Azamour may have already flown and it could well be that she will have to settle for bronze this time. Betting verdict: 1.5pts win Doyen @ 4/1 (Ladbrokes)
