This Weekend's Live Football Action
Sunday's early game is all about 100% records. Gianfranco Zola has a 100% winning league record as West Ham manager, West Ham have a 100% winning record at home this season, whilst Bolton suffer the ignominy of having a 100% losing record away from home. The odds on this match suggest that the bookmakers are confident that all of these 100% records will remain intact, with West Ham as short a 7/10 to take all three points.Gianfranco Zola has enjoyed a great start to his management career at West Ham and he will be hoping to continue this streak against a struggling Bolton side on Sunday. Despite his indiscretions last week Carlton Cole was given a chance to shine at the weekend and he grabbed it with both hands, scoring the opening goal in a 2-1 win over Fulham. The Trotters have been in dire form since their opening day victory over Stoke, and have only managed a point since then. Last weekend they held on for an hour against Manchester United before having an incredibly soft penalty awarded against them, which Cristiano Ronaldo duly converted. They took a battering during that game in terms of possession, with United keeping hold of the ball for three quarters of the match, but still managed to restrict the Red Devils to just 12 shots on goal. If they can play with the same determination on Sunday then they are more than capable of taking a point from the match. The feature game on Sunday sees David Moyes' Everton take on a Newcastle side under the temporary charge of Joe Kinnear. Apparently Kinnear's pre match press conference was littered with profanities aimed at journalists who have raised the odd eyebrow at his appointment. If that is anything to go by then his players will need to be wary about performing as they have done over the past few weeks, as the fabled 'hairdryer' treatment will undoubtedly be in the offing. There is nothing temporary about David Moyes' reign at Goodison Park though, with media reports this evening suggesting that he is about to sign an extension on his current contract. I think that Moyes is an excellent manager and securing his services is imperative to the long term future of the club. Having said that, I haven't been overly impressed with Everton so far this season, and their tame exit from the UEFA cup to an admittedly decent Standard Liege side has done nothing to allay my concerns. Their seven points this season have all been taken against the supposedly inferior promoted clubs, and they need to tighten up defensively before I can start justifying supporting them in the betting markets. Despite losing five games on the trot, I can't help but think that Newcastle are too big for this game, and at 9/2 they may be worth a bet. Recommendations:West Ham v Bolton - Draw - 5/2 (General)Newcastle beat Everton - 9/2 (Victor Chandler)Michael Owen Anytime Goalscorer - 11/4 (William Hill)
