Totesport Cambridgeshire at Newmarket tips (Sep 30th)
Newmarket handler Mikael Magnusson is one of the most underrated trainers on the circuit and gain a deserved big-race with victory with the highly progressive Smart Enough in the totesport Cambridgeshire at Newmarket on September 30. The three-year-old, who is a 10/1 chance with VCbet has gone from strength to strength this season and has been placed to perfection by Magnusson, who has had one eye on this race for much of the current campaign for his Cadeaux Genereux colt. Connections of Smart Enough have resisted some big-money offers for their charge in recent weeks, and it's not hard to see why there are those that want to acquire him. He put some experienced, battle-hardened handicappers to the sword at York last time where he made all to beat Bolodenka by two and a half lengths, looking like a potentially Group-class horse in the making. Smart Enough is versatile, but his two best performances have come on soft going and, given that underfoot conditions are usually on the easy side - indeed it was pretty testing when Blue Monday landed last year's renewal of this race - he will be at a distinct advantage. All we need to hope for now is a high draw. The selection was beaten just over two lengths when fourth of 30 behind Sir Gerard in the Britannia Stakes at Royal Ascot in June. Smart Enough will actually be meeting that rival on 6lb worse terms in the Cambridgeshire, but the ground was on the fast side at Ascot which suited Sir Gerard, whereas the plenty of cut in the ground wouldn't play to his strengths. James Fanshawe's charge has ran well under testing conditions before, but there can be little doubt that he is at his best on top of the ground. He finished well without being given an overly hard ride from a hopeless draw when fourth to Spectait in the totesport Mile at Glorious Goodwood. Granted a better draw this time, Sir Gerard must have a cracking chance of reversing those placings on 5lb better terms, but again much depends on how soft the going turns out to be. Spectait has won on good to soft and has always been considered a mud-lover, yet his best performance to date was when winning at Goodwood where the ground was riding on the fast side of good. Providing that it doesn't become bottomless, however, he merits the utmost respect given that he hails from a very shrewd yard that knows exactly what it takes to win this contest. Sir Gerard's stablemate Cesare is a proven mudlark and was backed off the boards when readily accounting for five rivals in a conditions race at Warwick last time. The Hunt Cup hero is unproven over the nine-furlong trip of the Cambridgeshire but shapes as though he'll stay. He's one to consider, but I suspect that there will be at least one or two that turn out to be better handicapped. Dunelight, who chased home Spectait in the totesport Mile, looked suited to a galloping, straight course when bolting up on his penultimate start at Ascot and, along with stablemate Dansili Dancer, comes firmly into the reckoning. But the latter looked a shade fortuitous when beating Fairmile at Haydock latest and may well struggle to confirm those placings. The race in question, the valuable totesport.com Stakes, was a slowly-run affair which didn't help Fairmile. Walter Swinburn's charge also looked desperately unlucky as his jockey Adam Kirby encountered all sorts of traffic problems when trying to come through the centre of the pack. He rates a live danger. Verdict - 2pts Smart Enough @ 10/1 VCbet
