TOTTENHAM UNDERDOGS IN CHAMPIONS LEAGUE DEBUT
Tottenham head into tonight's clash as significant underdogs.
With Spurs having a somewhat topsy-turvy start to the Premiership this year, the odds are against them in a clash with one of the more attacking German sides.
This sentiment was clearly underlined by Spurs boss Harry Redknapp with his comments this week that he fears that “Tottenham will suffer the kind of mauling England endured at the hands of Germany if he send his side out in a 'gung-ho' fashion”.
Betfair place Werder Bremen as favourites at 2.0, with a Tottenham win set at a wild 3.75. Spurs just don’t seem to have shown the spark that was present last season and as such, coupled with poor away form, come in as underdogs
With the mindset of Redknapp pretty clear, many are expecting a somewhat more conservative approach to tonight’s clash, and with that a low-scoring affair.
William Hill set a 1-1 draw at 7.5, with a Werder Bremen 1-0 win at 9.0.
A surprising Tottenham victory at 1-0 is at 12.0, with a 2-1 win at the same
The 'real deals' present themselves in the goalscorer's markets. With the news that Werder’s Claudio Pizarro is to miss tonight’s match, William Hill put Marko Arnautovic as favourite to score for Werder at 2.25, and at 6.0 if he collects the opener.
Roman Pavlyuchenko, who has yet to light up White Hart Lane this season, tops the Spurs contingent at 2.87, with Robbie Keane close behind at 3.0 even.
The long shot pick of the lot must be Luka Modric, who has been passed fit to play, at 7.0
One would not consider that this game is going to be making the classic clashes DVD series, however Spurs are a side that when they turn it on...they are magic to watch.
Many will be hoping that despite the forecast of defensive play, that at some point this world class midfield will ignite, and in doing so send the Spurs away corner into jubilation
However, the fact remains that being new to the stage, as well as playing away from home, Spurs are up against it and Werder should take this.
