TRANSFER DEADLINE DAY INS AND OUTS
Today’s news is dominated by the transfer deadline day comings and goings in the Premier League. Sunderland are hoping to complete the biggest money signing of the day as they look to bring in Ghanaian striker Asamoah Gyan from Rennes for around £12million. Gyan will probably be best remembered for his penalty miss in extra time of the World Cup quarter-final against Uruguay but also scored three goals for his side prior to that.
Eidur Gudjohnsen could be joining Stoke City or Fulham on a season-long loan deal today. The Icelandic forward spent the latter part of last season on loan at Tottenham and would represent a real coup for whichever side can secure his signature. Liverpool are looking to completed the deal which brings Paul Konchesky to Anfield and are also sniffing around West Ham striker Carlton Cole.
The biggest outward bound move of the day could be Robinho moving to AC Milan. The Brazilian striker smashed the British transfer record when moving to Easltands two years ago on transfer deadline day, but has failed to make the desired impact on the Premier League. And as yet there have been no confirmed bids for Aston Vila midfielder Ashley Young. The 25-year-old has been linked with a move to Tottenham throughout this summer, but remains at Villa Park as yet.
In tennis, Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal get their US Open challenges underway today. The Scot faces Lukas Lacko of Slovakia and the world number one will play Teymuraz Gabashvilli. Both men are extremely short odds on favourites to progress to the second round.
In the outright betting Murray and Nadal can both be backed at 7/2 with Betfred. Roger Federer is a 2/1 chance after waltzing through his opening round match against Brian Dabul in straight sets.
