US Masters review: Golf latest

Trevor Immelman won the first Major of the year and in being crowned US Masters champion denied the 6/4 pre-tournament favourite Tiger Woods from winning his fifth Masters as well as preventing the World No 1 from winning the Grand Slam at 6/1. Pre-tournament Immelam could have been backed at 330 on Betfair to win and while he never really looked like giving up the lead he had held since Thursday first round 68 his prive fluctuated on the final day on the betting exchange. He went into the final round as the 2.5 favourite and touched 3.15 after making bogey at the first but never looked back after that. The winning nationality (South African) traded at 10 on Betfair while the winning score -7 or lower traded at 3.5. Woods touched 3.2 for a Top 5 finish while fellow American Stewart Cink touched 18. Immelman, who becomes the first player to win after leading for the whole tournament since Ray Floyd in 1976 could not believe he was now the Masters Champion after accepting the Green Jacket off 2007 winer Zach Johnson. "This has been the ultimate rollercoaster ride, and I hate rollercoasters," Immelman said. "Here I am, after missing the cut last week, Masters champion. It is the craziest thing I have ever heard." As for Betingchoice's pre-tournament bets: There was good advice as we recommended the 6/5 on offer at Betfair for the week's best score to be 67 or higher. Steve Flesch matched that figure on the second day but nobody came close to breaking the five under score on the last day - Miguel Angel Jimenez taking the plaudits for the last day's best score with a 68 which included holing out from 180 yards. Our outright tips, Geoff Ogilvy e/w @ 25/1; Justin Rose e/w @ 40/1; Andres Romero e/w @ 80/1 and Fred Couples @ 80/1 rarely threatened although we did advise to lay Rose on the second day if his confidence wavered - which it did as he went on from tournament leader to finish the event at +7.
