US OPEN BETTING PETKOVIC VS. ZVONAREVA
Russian Vera Zvonareva and German Andrea Petkovic are set to decide the last quarterfinal spot at the US Open today when they get the night session underway at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The Russian is a solid favourite to advance with William Hill, listed at 2/9 to win outright. After all, she is a WTA Premium player ranked in the top ten and she is the 2010 Wimbledon finalist.
By contrast, these are completely unchartered waters for Petkovic. She is through to her first-ever US Open R16 on her third visit to the event. Her best run to date was a second round appearance in 2007.
Therefore, it’s not surprising that she is the significant puppy listed at 3/1 to reach her first-ever major quarterfinal.
Zvonareva has the edge in all the markets. She is listed as the 8/13 favourite to win in straight sets while a 2-1 score line to the Russian is tipped larger, at 16/5.
Bookmakers are certainly favouring a straight set affair at 1/3 over a three set affair at 19/10 and there you have an even better indication Zvonareva would be the better play owing to her experience and place in the game.
Petkovic is a whopping 6/1 bet to win in straight sets, which would be a massive upset should it occur so. A 2-1 score line is listed at an even larger 13/2; however, in some ways, this score line is more probable than the former.
A 2-1 score line to Petkovic isn’t unthinkable because Zvonareva has a tendency to unravel during her matches. Temperamental is the word that comes to mind.
In fact, last year she unravelled at precisely this stage of the tournament, albeit to better-known and credible player in Flavia Pennetta.
This is the first time Zvonareva and Petkovic collide at a WTA event and the stakes couldn’t be higher than they are right now.
You see, Zvonareva has never been into the quarterfinals at Flushing Meadows either although she has enjoyed better results at the other Grand Slams.
As the top player in this billing, this match is on Zvonareva’s racquet without a doubt. It is hers to lose. Petkovic will have to take it from her. It remains to be seen whether she can punch above her weight class.
