US OPEN BETTING TIPS SODERLING VS. MONTANES
Dangerous floater, Robin Soderling is looking to secure his spot in the US Open quarterfinals today when he takes on Spaniard Albert Montanes. The pair is scheduled to take to Louis Armstrong Stadium later this afternoon for their last 16 clash.
Soderling reached the 2009 US Open quarterfinals wherein he lost to Roger Federer. To date, that is his best run at this event.
Soderling has had better results at the French Open and Wimbledon Championships. In the former, he was a back-to-back finalist (2009-2010); the latter, he reached the semis for the first time this season (l. to Nadal).
Soderling is an almost untouchable favourite at 1/14 to advance over Montanes, tipped at 13/2. That Soderling is one of the ATP Premium players in the game augurs well for him and makes him the likely choice in the market.
Montanes, by contrast, is a middleweight player. He’s actually through to his first-ever R16 at a Grand Slam. You could say he’s one of the game's late bloomers at 29 years of age.
One could argue that Montanes benefited from an easy section of the draw. While I am not going to argue the truth of that, I will say it would be disingenuous to discount what is a career first for the Spaniard, and in some ways richly deserved.
Montanes has been consistent this season, reaching the third round in all the preceding Grand Slams. His move into the R16 is par for the course in what has been a banner season for the veteran.
He’s also picked up two titles – albeit clay-court titles –and played to a solid 31-17 mark ahead of the US Open fourth round.
Perhaps most significantly he beat a world No.1 player this year in none other than Roger Federer. He beat the maestro at Estoril en route to the title.
On the season, however, he is 1-2 against top opposition with losses to Federer at the Australian Open and Djokovic at Wimbledon.
Overall, Montanes is at a distinct "on-paper" disadvantage in every sense. Moreover, he trails 1-2 lifetime to Soderling. Beating the Swede is easier said than done. Should he do so it would be the biggest win of his career as it would take him to previously unchartered waters, a major quarterfinal.
