US OPEN BETTING WOZNIACKI VS. CIBULKOVA
Top seed Caroline Wozniacki, the short-odds-on favourite to outright win the US Open crown, is set to stare down a diminutive Dominika Cibulkova for a spot in the US Open semi-finals and if the formidable form Wozniacki has been enjoying were an indication of what we’re to expect, it’s an almost sure thing that she’ll go through.
Wozniacki advances into the quarterfinals without dropping a set, and dropping only ten games along the way. In the first three rounds, she only dropped three games. Maria Sharapova was most ambitious taking seven games off the rising Dane in their last 16 encounter.
The pressure falls entirely on Cibulkova to come up with something special tonight on Arthur Ashe Stadium and make a match of it because, clearly, Wozniacki won’t. Well, she hasn’t needed to in the early rounds, rather putting on a tennis clinic with an occasional serving of bagels (three times).
Not surprisingly, those looking to back the Danish star will be hard pressed to find a price that promises decent returns as she’s unanimously installed the runaway favourite across all platforms. William Hill has listed Caroline Wozniacki at 1/12 to win outright. Paddy Power has sweet Caroline a whopping 1/16 favourite.
At the same time, Cibulkova is the considerable underdog at 6/1 at William Hill and an even larger puppy at Paddy Power, listed at 7/1. Though these prices are not out-of-reach, per se, I suppose they could have been higher, upwards of 10/1 given Wozniacki’s form. Make no mistake, a win by Cibulkova is a long shot bet. A bit of a hallucinatory play that, if it were to happen, would be THE biggest upset of the tournament.
Cibulkova has shown that she can hang with the big girls and that she shouldn’t just be dismissed out of hand or discounted because she can barely see over the net standing at 160 cm tall. The little babe has played some big babe tennis and taken out some big babes in her short career.
This season she’s taken out Svetlana Kuznetsova twice; and last year, she beat former World No.1’s Dinara Safina and Maria Sharpaova on two separate occasions.
In some ways, Cibulkova is a miniature version of Wozniacki. Their games are quite similar. Cibulkova is a counter-puncher just like Wozniacki and she’ll rundown just about everything. Potentially, this match could be a bit of a: anything-you-can-do-I-can-do-better affair.
In many ways, there is no comparison between these two players however. Wozniacki is a top player now, she has won more titles than anybody in the game has over the last two seasons and she has more experience. Perhaps the most significant separator is going to be form and the mental game.
While nobody expects Cibulkova to win nor can they even imagine how she would do it, she only need be better than Wozniacki for the duration of the match, making any comparisons moot.
