Who will be the Lions Tour Captain?
Although the British Lions skipper's identity is unlikely to be unveiled until Sir Clive Woodward announces his 44-man squad next April, this hasn't stopped Sporting Odds speculating on who the captain will be. The clear favourite at this stage is Brian O'Driscoll at the stingy price of 1/2. Whilst there is no denying the Irish centre would be an inspirational choice, good luck to the long-term backers who will have to hold their breath every time the Leinster back requires treatment. The modern day game is extremely punishing to our top-flight players, and between now and next Summer there will be a few players unable to travel due to injury. At such short odds, it is probably best to leave O'Driscoll alone for now, unless another bookmaker sees fit to be a little more generous.Another reason not to back the Irishman at this stage is simply because Woodward hasn't made his mind up. A 100% healthy Wilkinson would have to be a contender for the role, while Jason Robinson has so far proven a decent International skipper, albeit for a limited period only. One name that has already impressed the Lions coach is Wales captain Gareth Thomas. The 8/1 currently available is well worth a small investment based on some recent comments made by Woodward as reported on the scrum.com website. "It was fantastic to be down in Wales for a week before the New Zealand game," said Woodward. "Gareth Thomas stood out, with his leadership and captaincy. He is a special player." And pressed further on the Lions captaincy issue, the coach added: "He (Thomas) is a definite contender." If Wales enjoy a successful six nations campaign, don't expect Gareth Thomas to still be available at such a big price
