Wigan vs Manchester United betting tips

The focus switches back to the Premiership this weekend following the flurry of Euro 2008 qualifiers which have taken place over the last week or so. Wigan entertain league leaders Manchester United at the JJB Stadium and Paul Jewell's charges are solid at home so should give the Red Devils something to think about. Despite brining in forwards Emile Heskey and David Cotterill, the departure of Jason Roberts who joined Blackburn for £3million was always going to leave a void that is hard to fill. Indeed, Roberts amassed an impressive 37 goals in 93 league appearance for The Latics - and he netted 14 goals for them in all competitions last season - so extra pressure will be on Camara this term. Senegal hitman Henry Camara was Wigan's leading Premiership scorer last term with 12 strikes, but the 29-year-old has hit the target just once in Wigan's five league games played so far during the current campaign. Goalscoring appears to be a general problem for The Latics as they've scored just six in their opening seven games. In stark contrast, Sir Alex Ferguson's men score for fun when in the mood and they have accrued 14 goals in the seven Premiership games played so far this term - and they struck a total of eight times in their first two matches. Add to this, the fact that they've conceded just four times in the seven games in question, it's not hard to see why Man Utd are where they are in the table. The fact that Wayne Rooney has not been firing since returning from injury and suspension, and that Ruud van Nistlerooy is no longer a Red Devil, has stretched United's striking resources somewhat. However, the veteran Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has bounced back from injury in great heart this season, and the Norwegian scored both of the Old Trafford outfits two goals during their 2-0 victory over Newcastle in their latest match on October 1. After Rooney's failure to get back on scoring track in England's Euro 2008 matches against Macedonia and Croatia, it will be interesting to see whether Sir Alex opts to pair Louis Saha up front with Solskjaer, with Rooney playing in a pocket behind them, or perhaps boy wonder might be relegated to the bench. It would seem unthinkable to imagine Rooney warming a bench for any other reason than preservation, but such is his lack of form at present it might be an option that the United coach has to consider. In any case, this is a game Man Utd should win. It's the type of game in which they simply cannot afford to drop points given the bigger fish that lie in wait in the Premiership pond. No disrespect to Wigan, they are tough as teak, but they don't possess the requisite class to deal with a side of the Red Devils' stature. Jewell's men are dogged, of that there's no doubt, and they'll probably go out for the first 45 minutes with the main objective being to keep a clean sheet. I can see them achieving this feat so the 2/1 on offer with bet365 about 0-0 in the half-time correct score market makes plenty of appeal. It was tempting to opt for draw/Man Utd in the double result market, but the recommended bet looks the safer option in case the visitors become frustrated after the interval and fail to break Wigan down.
