The business-end of the Premier League is definitely upon us and we have an absolutely vital fixture set to unfold today as Wigan continue their annual battle against relegation in their fixture against Swansea. This one looks to be a very interesting match-up because Wigan also face an FA Cup final against Manchester City at the weekend and they know that winning this match is arguably a bigger deal than securing the first piece of silverware in club history.

Wigan have never actually beaten Swansea in the Premier League but they were able to topple them in the League Cup back in 2010. Wigan’s home record has not been good this season but Swansea have really gone off the boil since winning the League Cup earlier in the year.
The Welsh side have failed to win any of their last seven matches and are languishing in mid-table, not in danger of relegation but also not punching around the European spots like they were for much of the early season. When was the last time you heard anyone mention Michu?
Wigan go into the match as the odds-on favourites to get the result that they dearly need and the bookmakers have priced them at around 5/6 for the outright victory while Swansea can be backed at a 19/5 price tag.
The draw, which would probably suit Swansea just fine but does little for Wigan, can be had at a 23/10 listing.
The victory would be especially symbolic because a victory for Wigan would see them vault above Newcastle and actually get out of the relegation zone. The Magpies have seen themselves get dragged into the mire after a pair of poor results in the past week. A Wigan victory would see four teams all sitting on 38 points with Southampton just a step ahead at 39. 41 points will be needed for survival so virtually every team needs to win at least one of their next two games in order to still be able to dictate their fate.
Wigan have the complication of dealing with an extra fixture this weekend.
