William Hill on this weekend's Newmarket Racing
2000 GUINEAS - Newmarket, Saturday 30th April, 15:15 BSTSelection : DUBAWIDanger : FootstepsinthesandDEMOCRATIC DEFICITShowed he had improved over the winter by beating Beat Rob Roy by a head in a slowly-run Craven Stakes earlier this month. Difficult to evaluate the form as the pace was muddling and this is likely to be far more of a test pace-wise.DIKTATORIALSigned off last season by landing the Group Three Tattersall Stakes at Newmarket in a bunch finish. Was considered to be a weak 2yo and can be expected to improved and if there are any chinks in Dubawi, has every chance in an open contest. Has always been well regarded and has serious place claims.DUBAWIThis first foal of Dubai Millennium established himself as a top notch Classic contender by winning all three starts as a two-year-old, culminating in an impressive performance in the Group 1 National Stakes at the Curragh. The form of that race has been given a timely boost by the victory of the fourth home that day, Democratic Deficit, who landed a gamble when winning the Craven Stakes. All recent reports from connections have been positively glowing regarding Dubawi and his much publicised romp in the Godolphin trials in Dubai resulted in him being cut with all firms down to a general price of 6/4. That is plenty short enough considering the competitive nature of this race but all the signs are that Dubawi will take a great deal of beating.FOOTSTEPSINTHESANDThis Giants Causeway colt has always been held in the highest regard. Not over-raced as a 2yo, he was very impressive when winning on both outings. Reports of his well-being in recent weeks only strengthen the case for him and the yard know a good one when they've got one. Should go very close.ICEMANLooked more than a shade unlucky when beaten about half a length in the Craven Stakes when finding a gap far too late. Has always looked the type to improve with age and a strongly-run race over a mile will suit ideally this season. Will be hard to keep out of the frame.ORATORIOConsistent sort last year and has some solid form to his name but may just be found wanting at the business end of the race. Whatever happens here, his shrewd trainer is sure to place him to good advantage.PARTY BOSSThe ever-optimistic Clive Brittain throws this one in at the deep end here, but probably quite rightly as the horse deserves a chance after winning five on the bounce. On form he has a lot to find and unless this is a well below standard Guineas, shouldn't be good enough.ROB ROYAnother unlucky runner in the Craven. His original effort was blocked before he was switched out wide to stay on strongly, but he didn't pick up on demand and he strikes me as potential Derby contender. The step up in trip looks ideal, there appears to be much improvement to come and Sir Michael was reported to say he had left plenty to work on. He has many similar attributes to North Light and I am expecting big things of him over trips in excess of a mile later in the year. However, he may not have the pace to trouble the principals here Selection : KARENS CAPERDanger : Maids CausewayCAPE COLUMBINESecond to Karens Caper in the Nell Gwyn Stakes but is well up to turning the tables on that rival for several reasons. She will be better suited by a faster pace- which she should get here- and she will come on a fair bit for that run. A must for the short-list.ECHELONRan a fair trial in the Fred Darling but would probably need to improve a fair bit on that to win this.KARENS CAPERWas a good winner of the Nell Gwyn Stakes and should prove to be even better over a mile. She picked up nicely once the question was asked and could well have a bit more up her sleeve. Has a first rate chance in one of the most open 1000 Guineas in recent years.MAIDS CAUSEWAYWon the Rockfel on her final outing and is one with very few question marks about her. She has shortened up in recent weeks in the betting due to some encouraging home reports. Wouldn't need to improve an awful lot to figure.PENKENNA PRINCESSPulled out all the stops to land the Fred Darling and is clearly an above average filly. Whether she is up to winning a Classic is another thing entirely. The form certainly of her latest win doesn't look anything special and it would be a surprise if she was good enough.SATIN KISSDifficult to evaluate her form in Nad Al Sheba but she has been impressive on both outings so far this year. Comes from the all-powerful Godolphin camp and must be respected.SHANGHAI LILYHardly tremendous value on her bare form and is at the head of the market purely on home reputation. She could easily be good enough as her yard knows what it takes to with this race, but there is little appeal at the current price.VIRGINIA WATERSSurprised her trainer by winning so well on her reappearance and could well have further improvement to come. One of the more likely choices at a working mans price and hard to discount.
