On Monday we saw two excellent matches with France getting the better of a quality Nigeria side that really came close a few times and they gave the French an awful scare. The French side have looked good so far this tournament and it was hard on the Africans, who were able to put up a dogged resistance against the French side, who were utterly outplayed in the opening 45 minutes of the contest.
One of the main talking points of this World Cup has been the fact that so many of the matches that appeared to be lopsided on the surface have turned out to be excellent contests for both fans loyal to the clubs involved and for neutral supporters as well.
The quality of play has been good on all sides and the only real disappointing matches tended to be group stage matches between some of the higher profile sides who were bounced out early from the competition.
The second match was also in keeping with this pattern as the German side were completely nullified by a dogged Algerian resistance during the bulk of the match. It took a goal later on in the contest and then another in the closing stages to finally shut the door on Algeria. The Desert Foxes even battled back and were able to secure a last minute strike to take it to 2-1 but it was too little too late for these players who were also playing during the month of Ramadan and were unable to eat or drink fluids during the day.
Thankfully it was a cool day out, the coolest day of the tournament, when Germany and Algeria finally kicked off. Many of the supporters in the stands could be seen wearing jackets and scarves.
