WTA French Open: Henin and Sharapova Showdown in the Third Round
- By Nila A on May 29, 2010 23:08 GMTThe last encounter between Justine Henin and Maria Sharapova at the Australian Open quarters almost two-and-a-half years ago doesn’t bring back happy memories for the Belgian; being annihilated 6-4, 6-0.
Neither would the recollection of how unsporting Sharapova’s father was in congratulating his daughter's triumph, with a mock throat-slitting gesture.
History between the pair notwithstanding the former world No.1’s have set up an attention worthy clash in the round of 32 at Roland Garros, one that will hopefully be exemplary in sportsmanlike conduct and importantly, riveting as it unfurls towards conclusion.
A lot has happened to both players since their last meeting. Sharapova succumbed to various injuries, namely a shoulder injury that required surgery. Henin retired, lived happily off court for a stint before reversing her retirement and returning to the game at the start of the season.
There is no doubt as to why Henin is the favourite in this match; the Belgian ruled Roland Garros in her heyday, winning the Suzanne Lenghlen Cup four-times during her illustrious, now so-called first career.
Sharapova is after winning the Strasbourg title. Clay is her least favourite surface but in winning the French Open warm-up event she has set herself up as a dark horse in Paris. Some believe she could give Henin something to think about. Take her at least to three sets.
Overall, Henin has the 6-3 lifetime edge over Sharapova and the obvious surface edge which makes her the likely bet. Henin though hasn’t been immune to nerves since her return and I believe she will be nervous in the first encounter of her new career against Sharapova. I expect there to be quite a few momentum shifts and possibly three sets. Ideally, I would love to see Henin triumph in straight sets and exact revenge – sportingly of course.
