Wycombe Wanderers vs Chelsea

Even the most romantic of romanticists cannot expect League Two's Wycombe Wanderers to do anything bar lose gracefully when the reigning Premiership Champions Chelsea come calling in what is a colossal mismatch for this Carling Cup semi-final at Adams Park on Wednesday evening.Incredibly, the Chairboys have taken the scalp of London-based Premiership sides in the least two rounds, Fulham and most recently Charlton, performances which were all the more meritorious considering that they had the disadvantage of being away on both occasions. Indeed, credit where credit is due. However, Fulham fielded a depleted side and Charlton were at rock bottom in terms of both confidence and morale when defeated by Paul Lambert's charges. That's not to detract from the seismic achievement of Wycombe in beating these sides, but one has to be realistic. And realistically Chelsea will be an entirely different proposition. As the Blues demonstrated when thumping Macclesfield 6-1 at Stamford Bridge in their FA Cup third round meeting at the weekend, they are in no mood to be on the receiving end of an upset. As they tend to do in their games, Chelsea took a while to hit top gear - four of their six goals came in the second half, two in the last ten minutes - but it was ultimately a demolition job.I doubt that Wycombe will be given such a severe hammering, but they have lost two and drawn two of their last four league games, which doesn't augur well as, if you were to hold out any hope for minnows of Wycombe's nature being giants of Chelsea's stature, you would at least expect the underdogs to go into the game with confidence and momentum. On the plus side, the Buckinghamshire based club don't concede many in their own backyard and, interestingly, have conceded just three times in the first half in 18 matches played in all competitions at home this term. It's a shade risky to expect them to go into the interval unscathed, but Coral are offering even money about 29+ in the first goal time betting, which makes plenty of appeal.Wycombe's objective will no doubt be to take each half as it comes - and I expect them to defend deeply against their illustrious visitors in the first half before going for broke after the break. Naturally, if they play too negatively this could backfire, but I wouldn't be in the least bit surprised if Chelsea are unable to draw blood from their rivals for at least the first 29 minutes. Verdict - 29+ in the first goal time betting market @ Evens (Coral)
