2013 Open Championship Betting Tips and Preview Part 1

A beautiful day’s golf action kicked off at Muirfield today as the 143rd Open Championship tee’d off in a serious way. The players seem to be doing quite well on the course with plenty of under par scores highlighted the day’s play. There is definitely a lot to like about this major championship and the outright leader at the moment is American Zach Johnson who carded a very solid -5 score on the first day.

Just behind Johnson are Spaniard rafael Cabrera-Bello and Mark O’Meara at -4. O’Meara hasn’t really been heard from in a major for quite some time but he looks set to roll back the years over the next few days and put in a real challenge for the Open Championship title.

Following them, a large swath of players are sitting at -3 with Miguel Angel Jimenez, Dustin Johnson, Brandt Snedeker and Tom Lehman included among them. Indian golfer Shiv Kapur is also at -3 but at the time of this writing he still had four holes left to play so he could wind up challenging for the lead or dropping a few strokes before the day’s action is complete.

Todd Hamilton, Phil Mickelson, Angel Cabrera and Jordan Speith are all at -2 while Tiger Woods is also sitting on the same score. Woods usually doesn’t start so hot in big tournaments that he winds up winning. Typically, Tiger is “in the hunt” and then kicks on over Saturday and Sunday to roar to the lead. He had an excellent back nine performance and he will be looking to build on that over the next couple of days play at the open.

Tiger Woods remains the outright favourite to win the tournament and punters will find him trading at a 4/1 price tag. Phil Mickelson hit some very nice putts on the first day of action and he will be looking to keep that momentum going.
