2014 Open Championship Day Two Betting Update
- By A.J. Ryder on July 18, 2014 18:57 GMTRory McIlroy has surged into the lead at Royal Liverpool with an emphatic performance over the past two days after kicking off the tournament in a big way on day one. While the Northern Irish linksman is well known for performing with lots of quality on day one, his pattern as of late has been to fade out as things go on. This hasn’t happened this time and it has also been remarked by several members of the media on-course that McIlroy really appears to be enjoying himself out there.

There is a lot to like about McIlroy’s performance up until now but the price being offered on him has shortened up considerably and he is now considered to be odds-on for the big victory in a major Championship.
Most major European bookmakers have him floated around even money earlier in the day but now virtually all of them have taken him into 8/13 or even 1/2 in some cases.
At the tie of this writing, McIlroy was sitting on a -12 lead and was four shots ahead of Dustin Johnson. A large amount of players that include Sergio Garcia, Francesco Molinari, Ryan Moore and Rickie Fowler are all looking to be in good contention for a place finish here and they all sit at six under par at the moment.
Molinari in particular performed well today, posting a poor nine hole result on the front but then stormed back into contention with an excellent performance playing the back nine.
Tiger Woods, who seemed confident coming into the tournament but whom many punters won’t touch any more in a betting market, was able to post a +2 score and looks set to make the cut - but just barely. Several marquee names have not done particularly well and are likely to miss the cut. This includes Lee Westwood, Bubba Watson and Ernie Els.
Punters will find Dustin Johnson trading at 6/1 right now for Open Championship glory - not a bad wager if you actually expect McIlroy to be the victim of another epic collapse when he seemingly had a tournament won. Sergio Garcia is the next best-priced contender at 20/1 while Rickie Fowler can be backed at a 22/1 price tag.
