- By A.J. Ryder on September 27, 2014 06:44 GMTEurope took the first day lead in the 2014 Ryder Cup after posting a 5-3 result following the opening round of one of golf’s biggest events across the entire globe. The Europeans have been coming into the tournament heavily favoured but it looks like the Americans are going to be putting up a pretty solid challenge here. There’s a lot to like about both sides right now and the bookmakers appear to consider the Europeans the outright favourites but the USA are definitely not out of it at this point.

Heading towards the close of play on the opening round of the Ryder Cup, it looked as though it was heading to toss-up territory but the late flourish from the European pairings put them squarely in the lead and their 5-3 lead tells no lies at this point. It appears as though the bookmakers genuinely fancy them to stay on and keep their lead so there isn’t a huge amount of outright value on them at this point but you do have to respect the American teams ability to finish up their rounds.
Many observers found that the Europeans were genuinely riding their luck while the Americans were able to produce some skillful shots and bail themselves out of trouble. It will be interesting to see if this continues on day two and if the Americans can make it count when it comes down to the scoreline.
There has also been some criticism of the pairings that the Europeans have put together and they appear to be sticking with their current game plan at the time of this writing.
Justin Rose and Henrik Stensson will lead off once again for the Europeans and their opponents will be Bubba Watson and Matt Kuchar - both players looking to get the one-up on their European counterparts at Gleneagles.
