No sooner did he win the Masters this year at Augusta in a fantastic front-running display of golfing fortitude then he was able to muster up a gutsy performance that had just as much to do with his own personal consistency than it did the 12 foot three-putt from Dustin Johnson that ultimately gave him the title without even needing the 18 hole play-off that loomed large on Monday.
One of the best things that Spieth will take from his US Open victory was that, in his mind at least, he genuinely didn’t play as well as he could have but was still able to get the victory. At times he was able to bounce ahead and looked to have everything secured - he stood 3 strokes ahead at various points only to see that collapse within a hole or two.
Every time he took a big step forward he seemed to take an equally big one backwards but was still able to hang around long enough and capitalize when others ultimately flubbed their lines. The course itself proved to be one of the stars of the show as players struggled with the fast pace on the greens and the difficult bunker shots that dotted the Washington course.
Despite Spieth coming into the Open in Scotland with a pair of major championships under his belt already, Rory McIlroy is still getting the edge from the bookmakers to successfully defend his championship and bring to an end any speculation that we may see a historic Grand Slam pulled off by a player who is only just now able to legally order a beer in a restaurant in his own country.
