2015 Open Championship Betting Preview PT 2
- By A.J. Ryder on June 22, 2015 23:00 GMTThe bookmakers seem to have priced McIlroy as the general 9/2 favourite for the 2015 Open Championship while some books have decided to take him into a 4/1 price tag. That is likely because of all the momentum he had going late in the US Open after starting badly but nearly playing himself back into contention over the last two days. Something that a lot of other talented young golfers were not able to pull off - Rickie Fowler chief among them.

Spieth, to his credit, can be backed at around 6/1 and that will represent some value to many people despite the fact that he doesn’t boast nearly as much experience at St Andrews as a number of the other favoured contenders do here. The fact remains that Spieth looks to be a genuine golfing prodigy and lightning is known to strike twice - the question is can it strike three or even four times?
McIlroy and Spieth seem to be in a league of their own as far as the bookmakers are concerned and you’ll find Dustin Johnson trading at a 16/1 margin as the next best priced contender. Justin Rose is also getting plenty of respect and he’s in the same corridor with a listing of anywhere from 16/1 to a 20/1 margin. Adam Scott can be backed at 20/1 as well.
Louis Oosthuizen was able to acquit himself very well in the closing stages on Sunday and he almost wound up in a play-off but was undone by Spieth’s ability to two-putt and secure a birdie on 18. He’s in the mix here with a 25/1 price tag that will look good as an each-way bet if you can get somebody to pay 6 places.
Henrik Stenson was in contention early but quickly lost steam and was able to secure a respectable finish but far from what he would have wanted when he was a -5 co-leader on the first day’s play. He’s a general 25/1 alongside Rickie Fowler and Jason Day - who earned himself plenty of fans as well thanks to a brave performance battling vertigo at the US Open.
Other notable contenders include Sergio Garcia at 25/1, Phil Mickelson at 28/1, Hideki Matsuyama at a 40/1 margin. You’ll find Tiger Woods priced at 40/1 as well, what a story that would be.
