There is a lot to like about this year’s iteration of the Open Championship and it’s particularly refreshing that there are a number of different narratives starting to develop. Heading into the tournament we had the usual questions arising about whether this would the tournament when Tiger Woods would magically somehow get good again and capture another trophy on his path to the Golden Bear’s all-time majore championship record.
As many would have ultimately predicted, Woods failed to make the cut and played some uninspiring stuff at St Andrews - a course that had seen him play well in the now seemingly-distant past.
Jordan Spieth had been the other major source of contention heading into the tournament with virtually everybody wondering whether he truly had the chops to become the first golfer in decades to win a trifecta of major championships in a single calendar year.
It looks like there is as good a chance as any of that happening with virtually all major bookmakers pricing Spieth as the betting favourite to win the 2015 Open Championship despite not actually holding the lead going into the final round of play on Monday. It will be unique to see a Monday session played at the Open as it hasn’t happened since the 1950s.
